Chiron: A Path From Wounds to Wisdom
Astrologer Steven Forrest describes the planets as a map of the human psyche: “They represent the actual structure of the mind. Each one symbolizes a particular psychological function…” (Forrest, The Inner Sky, 1984, p. 10-11) They are divided into separate categories: the inner (personal) planets, and the outer (transpersonal or generational) planets. The inner planets, which include the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars, are more closely associated with personal psychological functions. The outer planets are split into two groups: Jupiter and Saturn, which govern societal or transpersonal themes, followed by Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which have universal meanings often related to deeper, generational aspects of our collective human consciousness.
Jupiter and Saturn fall between the inner- and outer-most groups, along with a small asteroid/comet, named Chiron, that conspicuously travels between Saturn and Uranus. Before we discuss Chiron and its function in our birth chart, a bit of context from astronomy and mythology might help set the stage.
What is Chiron?
Chiron is a planetoid discovered in 1977 by an American astronomer, Charles Kowal. It orbits the Sun in an unstable path that crosses the orbits of Saturn and Uranus with a period of 50.45 years. It is one of several asteroid-sized icy objects, called Centaurs, that cross paths between the inner and outer planets.

Chiron's mythological background
Chiron was named after a centaur in Greek mythology, a wise healer and teacher who could not heal himself. The son of the Titan Cronus and Philyra, a sea nymph, Chiron lived at the foot of Mount Pelion in Thessaly. Unlike his violent and savage counterparts, Chiron was renowned for his wisdom and mastery of medicine.
He instructed many Greek heroes, including Heracles, Achilles and Jason. Tragically, Chiron was accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow shot by Heracles. Unable to heal his wound, he gave up his immortality in exchange for the freedom of Prometheus and became the constellation Centaurus.
Chiron in the birth chart
Known as the "wounded healer" in astrology, its symbolism and influence encompass how we experience our innermost wounds to our most profound abilities to heal ourselves and others.
Chiron's position in the birth chart reveals our deepest spiritual wounds and how we seek to heal them. This “wounded” area may be experienced, especially in youth, as over-compensation, feelings of inadequacy and struggles with self-worth within a specific area of life. It is not a grain of sand but perhaps a grain of suffering or a grain of light that enters, stimulating calcium carbonate to build up in lustrous iridescent layers around it, creating a pearl. With a natural luminosity that seems to glow from within, the pearl represents what is most precious and pure, guarded by dragons, hidden in its fleshly shell. Chiron and Saturn
As it weaves between Saturn and Uranus, Chiron creates connections between material and ethereal worlds. Saturn governs materialism and functions in the physical world, representing how we express discipline, logic and reason. In contrast, Chiron symbolizes integration, healing and balance.

Saturn's approach to healing is methodical, hard-working and gradual, contrasting with Chiron, which can be instantaneous and transformative.
Chiron and Uranus: kindred energies bridge the gap
Uranus, known as the "Great Awakener," is often associated with sudden change, innovation, rebellion and awakening to new perspectives. It symbolizes liberation from constraining, traditional structures (Saturn). Uranus's energy is disruptive but can lead to growth and transformation by challenging the status quo.
Chiron's orbit weaves between Saturn and Uranus, placing it in a unique position that symbolically bridges the energy of Saturn and the innovative, radical energy of Uranus. Chiron's position between Saturn and Uranus allows it to act as a mediator, integrating the energies of both planets into our consciousness. While Saturn represents order, discipline and structure, Uranus embodies freedom, the breaking of boundaries and sudden change. Chiron can help balance these two conflicting energies by providing a path for understanding and reconciliation.

Chiron's relationship with Uranus also highlights the potential for sudden and unexpected healing or transformation. Uranus's energy can stimulate sudden insights or shifts in perspective, leading to profound changes.

Chiron and Pluto
Chiron's symbolic function also finds resonance with Pluto's psychological depths, control and facing our inner wounds. While not as well-understood as celestial bodies like Mercury or Venus, both Pluto (discovered in 1930) and Chiron (discovered in 1977) represent astrological concepts that provide us with new insights into human nature. These bodies were discovered in the past century, and while we’ve learned a lot about them in that time, I still consider them new. I’m only a year older than the discovery of Chiron.
Understanding where Chiron sits relative to these planets that deal with deep subconscious themes in the birth chart, and how they “talk” to one another through aspects and rulerships, we begin to see how Chiron facilitates our ability to plumb the depths of human consciousness to heal mind, body and spirit—if we’re able to move beyond the “rules-based” viewpoint of Saturn, forever rooted in the physical world. Moving between these two dimensions, using Chiron, is key (in fact, the symbol for Chiron resembles a “key”).
